Research for Character Development
Recommendations, but not limited to.

1) Students character makeup profiles should be in a folder.
2) Create an account with webs.com and choose a simple domain e.g. spasqual.webs.com
3) Morgue/Portfolio website page named Stage Makeup.
4) Research information should be in the portfolio and sources should be sited.
5) Research information should be 500-600 words.
6) Makeup profiles will be graded 3-6 times per semester depending on 6wk to 15wk semester.
7) Students must bring makeup kit to every class after the first meeting. Ponds cold cream, clean towel, head band to keep hair out of the face, baby wipes, mascara, folder for character profile sheets and a makeup bag/box is required.
8) Stage Makeup by Laura Thudium text required for class.
9) Ben Nye Theatrical Creme Pro Makeup Kit (make sure it is close to your skin tone) in bookstore.

Stage, Film and Theatre Makeup: Begins with analyzing the character that is being portrayed. Research on the character is important to makeup process.
Example on researching: Is the person poor (socioeconomics), under stress, exposed to sun or winter cold months, no sun exposure, age spots, addictions (smokers, drinking or poor diet), beautiful, glamorous or maybe been in an accident (train, car, abuse or stairs). Characters range from some of the following possible applications we can do in a semester: * Highlighting and Shadowing * Beauty/glamour * International - Ethnicities * Trauma - cuts, bruises, scars or injuries * Old Age * Middle Age *Special Eye Makeup * Fantasy * Cartoon Characters *Struggling Class Makeup *Egyptian Pharaohs, Kings and Queens *Greek Gods and Goddesses *Stoutness and Slimness * Kabuki - Japanese * Decade - 50's, 60's or 70's for example * Century - 17th or 18th Century * Final Exam - Special Mask Makeup |

Highlighting and Shadowing
Purpose: Bring out facial features, but shaping it with a lighter color or darker color to give a depth to your face features. This technique is used for Beauty makeup, Old age makeup and wear you begin with applying makeup to the face for certain makeup accomplishments.
The first step is to get to know the shape of your face. This is important for applying your highlighting and shadows. This technique has been around since the 1920's. It is not a new trend, the only new part of this is the name Contouring - Beauty.
The class textbook, Stage Makeup by Laura Thudium. Chapter 5, page 31 gets into the other purposes of highlighting and shadowing, creating illusions that emphasize and bring forward certain aspects of the facial plane.

Cat/Lion
Research on a character makeup, be it fantasy, animal or special effects is vital. Finding original photos of the subject will benefit you in knowing what, color, textures, or patterns to use for your character makeup.

Kabuki
Kabuki is Japanese influenced stage makeup for their NOH theatre (skill or talent) depicts classical Japanese musical drama's since the 14th century. It portrays a certain demeanor or facial gesture for the character, giving the audience view a visual on who is the character. Strong, Vigilant, Hero, etc...

Old Age
Using aging lines on the face. Squinting or smiling hard to achieve your own person age lines. Certain ethnicities age differently, doing some research on your ethnic background for more information always helps.

Stage makeup is the foundation to the following: Working with intermediate and advance prosthetics, cast molds, which is an artificial part and then is decorated with makeup and airbrushing techniques. Studying Stage Makeup can lead you to a career as a Makeup Artist or Special Effects Artist such as those you see on FACE OFF, TV Show on Syfy is a great example.
