Welcome to Sonia's online portfolio site, she has created this site since 2000 to showcase her skills, creativity and what she loves do and share with others. The students she teaches at Valencia, careers are focused in Entertainment and Design Technology, Film Production, Music Production or Digital Media. Her years of experience is in a little bit of every part of a production associated with live entertainment makes her a well rounded person and teacher. Sonia has been a theatre-goer, tv, and film since the age of 13, first she began as a performer and worked on the technical and production aspects of the show. Then she branched quickly in to technical side by doing spotlight and electrics, lucky for her, her high school had a theatre where touring shows visited and she built much experience shadowing and working on these shows. By the time she had graduate high school Flagler Palm Coast High School, Bunnell, FL her resume had seventy-five productions which spanned school and visiting tour companies experience. This set the path for her to get hired on at Universal Studios in 1997 while being a full time student at Valencia Community Collge.
Sonia's main growth as a Entertainment Lighting Designer began in New York while working at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park, various art studios, Blue Heron Arts Center, Fordham University Lincoln Center blackbox and whitebox studio. Upon her return to Florida in August 2001, she freelance designed all over the state. In the summer of 2004 she decided to pursue Walt Disney World Entertainment. Working at Magic Kingdom as a pyrotechnician and stage tech. She transfered 6 months later to Downtown Disney Pleasure Island to focus on club lighting, camera operator and pyrotechnics. As a Disney cast member, Sonia has had the privilege to teach Lighting the Disney Way which is basic lighting and electrical information provide to managers and technicians who are in other areas expertise. She was on the Lighting Design Global Bench and worked in the following clubs: BET Soundstage, Mannequins, West End Stage, 8 Trax and Rock and Roll Beach Club. Before leaving as a full time cast member Sonia had the opportunity to be a Temp Production Planner for Downtown Disney, Boardwalk, Resorts and the Marketplace. This allowed her to work with budgets, assigning crews, grand opening of restaurants and stores, redesign of WDW property stages, venues and live shows focusing in lighting and safety procedures, working along side a great design team to create special events. Her current status is as an adjunct instructor and freelance lighting designer.
